Winter Skincare Essentials

I love winter: it's probably my favourite season. I love being cosy under a warm blanket, watching a film next to my fireplace with a warm tea on my hand. However, even though I love winter, I hate what it does to my skin. I have an oily t-zone but the rest of my face is pretty much problem-free, that is until winter comes. My skin gets super dry, especially on my cheeks, my lips get all gross and my hands feel like they've been lost in the Sahara desert for 30 years.

Once the weather starts getting colder, I tend to change my skincare routine a bit mainly by adding products to make sure my skin is up to part. Here are 4 of my winter skincare essentials.

Apparently, you should choose an oil-based moisturizer during winter, as it keeps your skin retain more moisture than a water-based solution. That doesn't really work for me though. If you're like me and have a very sensitive skin, I would recommend you getting the Cien Aqua Moisturizer. It's water-based, super cheap and works wonders. It's been my go-to moisturizer for a really long time.

If you are lucky enough not to have sensitive skin then yes, I would recommend you getting an oil-based moisturizer and apply it at least once a day in the morning.

Hand Cream

I used to hate hand cream. I thought it made my hands slippery and oily so I couldn't be bothered to put it on. As the years went by, however, I came to the realisation that, if I don't want ugly chapped hands I need to moisturize them at all times, especially during winter. I went through 2 bottles of Caudalie hand creams in a few short months and now bought a new one (much cheaper too) that doubles as a hand cream and body lotion. I bought the Laura Rossi Coco Monoi Coconut Hand and Body Cream and I'm IN LOVE with it. I only cost me 1€ (yes only 1€), it works wonderfully and it leaves you smelling like a fresh coconut for hours! Just the other day, my cousin walked into my room and thought I had a coconut scented candle on because the smell was so intense (not in a bad way of course).

If you could get a small little moisturizer co carry around with you everywhere it'd be great for your skin not only now but later on in life as well.

Lip Balm

This is a huge one for me. You won't see me leave the house at any time of the year without a lip balm on my bag. I have kind of an obsession with lip balm to be honest. I used to be one of those people who had tons of lip balms lying around the house and never used use entirely. Last year though, I did a huge makeup clean-up and threw out a bunch of lip balms that had gone bad and gave the good ones to family members. Since that, I've bought two lip balms, the Vaseline Lip Therapy and the Vaseline Petroleum Jelly and have been using them on rotation. Once these are done I will probably buy Badger Lip Balm Stick which according to this amazing article by is the best one.

Lip balms are such an essential for winter (and year-round really). Everybody hates the feeling of chapped lips right? If you're not into wearing lip balms during the days, try putting a generous amount on your lips before you go to bed. Trust me, your lips will thank you.

Body Lotion

I know, I know: Once you take a hot shower, the last thing you want is to get butt naked and spent a few minutes applying lotion all over your body. All this on a winter day. I get you, I really do. It takes me a lot of willpower to not get dressed right away but it has to be done. I must be honest though, I don't do this every day after I shower but I try to do it at least 3/4 times a week. The skin on your body, just like your face get dry during winter so moisturizing it even if you don't have it as exposed like your face.
